Update on Skills Development and Training in Europe

Decisions taken in 2017 JCI European Conference relating Skills Development

While Conference Assembly, two major decisions were taken relating Skills Development issues and developing training in Europe. When the practical details have been cleared, the updated documents on these following issues will be published to be available and shared in Google Drive.

A NEW STANDARD FOR TRAINERS - JCI EUROPE CERTIFIED TRAINER

The purpose of the standard is set commonly agreed minimum requirement to demonstrate the basic qualification as a trainer. The standard will set some level assurance on the background and readiness a person has to act as a trainer.

As background: After JCI decided not to use formerly known standardization levels, like Certified Local Trainer or National Graduate, it has been more difficult to have a clear picture in mind what kind of abilities a person have as a trainer. For example, at the moment it cannot been found out easily has a trainer passed a course about basic presentations skills and/or train-the-trainer course and familiarized him/herself with learning and learning cycle. This has also affected e.g. that without some assurance on abilities; especially trainers on the beginning of their training career have had challenges to get training opportunities abroad to develop them further.

The goal of implementing the standard is to:
  • active more exchange of trainers between countries
  • provide opportunities for trainers to train and develop also outside their own organization
  • creates a pool of active trainers, in active member age - to be used also in official European events
  • preserve and raise the quality of training and training session in Europe.

The criteria were selected to demonstrate basic skills and knowledge about JCI, presenting, training and learning. Based on the criteria for JCI Europe Certified Trainer, a person must have:

  • passed and graduated from (JCI) Presenter or equivalent
  • passed and graduated from JCI Impact
  • passed and graduated from JCI Achieve
  • passed and graduated from Train-the-trainer course by JCI or equivalent

ACTION NEEDED! JCI National Organization in Europe can certify their own standardized
(=a course that is part of the permanent course selection of the national organization) (JCI) Presenter and “JCI Train-the-trainer” like courses to be accepted as equivalent courses. National Organization can do it by providing in English the summary, course objective, length of the course and content to JCI Skills Development Committee Members for Europe.

After the approval, the course is certified as equivalent course. The sooner we have the courses to be approved, the sooner individual members in your NOM have the change to fill their information on the database for JCI Europe Certified Trainer. NOTE! An individual from your national organization does not have the chance for certification, if fulfilling the criteria is dependable on these equivalent courses and national organization has not been certified those courses as equivalent courses.

At the beginning, we ask your patience with the approvals of equivalent courses, since we might have plenty of requests coming at the same time.

DATABASE FOR SKILLS DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS AND
JCI EUROPE CERTIFIED TRAINERS

The purpose of the database is to gather information from national organizations in Europe about trainers and skills development & training sessions in order to
  • exchange the know-how between the countries
  • increase the variety of skills development session available
  • provide opportunities for trainers to train and develop also outside their own organization
  • preserve and raise the quality of training session in Europe.

There will be two separate databases which consist 3 different kind of information:

  1. Trainer database: Information about trainers, who have achieved the European standard, JCI Europe Certified Trainer, as a trainer.
  2. Training and Skills Development sessions database:

            a. Information about training session that member (defined above) can offer to other national                   or local organizations. The courses must have been created by them or they have to have                     the rights to run the courses.

            b. Information about training sessions that are part of the portfolio of national or local                               organization (the rights of the training belong to the organization instead of individual                         member) and the organization can deliver the course by their own trainer resources who                       have reached the European Standard, JCI Europe Certified Trainer.

AN UPDATE! The purpose is to publish the databases in couple of weeks. The proposal relating to JCI Europe Certified Trainer was amended in Conference Assembly. With the amendment, National President or Training responsible from the national organization must accept in written the certification request coming from their national organization. We are working on this to find good & simple technical solutions to execute this decision with the resources available, still ensuring the smooth use of the database. For this reason we might have to postpone the publishing of databases for some days, but we are doing our best to get everything ready as soon as possible.

JCI Facilitator, new “more than just a JCI train-the-trainer course” was tested in EC

A new course, JCI Facilitator, was tested for the first time in 2017 JCI European Conference in Basel. This course is about developing the skills of trainers, and focuses on facilitating the participants’ experiences. Facilitating skills are not just for training sessions but also for running e.g. forums in your own community enhancing the impact JCI has. The objective of the course is to enhance skills of JCI members and young active citizens to strengthen their Local Organizations and create positive change.

The course has been developed by a professional training company and the first official pilot was held in Basel, with 11 participants from 8 different national organizations (Denmark, Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, France, Norway, Estonia). The development phase of the course will last, according the plans at the moment, until after the 2018 conferences and after that the training company will hand over the training to JCI to be implemented.

IMPORTANT! As a requirement to join the course, it was informed beforehand that participants of the course are expected to give detailed written feedback for the development of the course. Now it is the time to have an influence on the future shape of the course! Make sure the participant(s) from your national organization will tell in details what they liked and what development needs they saw. Participants will be instructed in more details to give the feedback and their recommendations.

Inside the Brussels bubble: Two reviews of the JCI EUKHT

We asked two participants of the 2018 JCI European Know-How Transfer to tell us about their overall experience. Read their stories here:     "No woman, no panel" “No woman, no panel” took my full attention during my visit of the European Parliament. I was trying to find out what it means in this context. I got my answer when in one of the committee meetings I was visiting, the chair mentioned that at the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality no voting will take place if there is an insufficient number of women participating at the meeting that have a voting right. Now it was getting even more exciting! I was shadowing Ms. Vilija Blinkeviciute, a great leader from my home country Lithuania and chair of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality of the European Parliament. During our open conversations we touched the ground of women’s situation in the EU and discussed topics like domestic violence, economic life standards and life quali

Application Deadline April 11th - 2018 JCI European Academy

This years' JCI European Academy will be from the 17th to the 21st of August in Gothenburg, Sweden. The JCI European Academy offers trainings in various topics related to leadership. It is a fantastic chance to develop the JCI organization at a local, national and international level. For example, the international network that is created during the Academy can be the foundation of a sustainable cooperation among JCI Local Organizations across the country borders of Europe. The web application for participants has already opened and we have already heard back from a lot of countries. Still, there are quite a few countries left we have not heard of. The deadline for the applicants to fill in their web application is on 11th April.  Please promote this years' JCI European Academy to your National Organization! Experiencing the European Know-How Transfer - A participant's report

Lessons learned from the JCI European Know-How Transfer 2016 Almost 2 years have passed since I took part in the JCI European Know-How Transfer in Brussels. Those two years seem to have rushed by very fast as I can still remember the feeling of how it felt to be in a group of enthusiastic JCI members within the heart of European decision-making. For me the week offered an extensive outlook on how decision-making really happens on the European level - starting from lobbying the decision-makers in practice to cooperation between the European Parliament and the European Commission on setting directives. The best experience was that we really got the chance to learn from the people doing the actual daily work in Brussels and who had been involved in many of the decision-making processes for years. This is not something you can learn from text books or promotional brochures of the European Union. Personally, I also enjoyed the time I got to spend with my host Liisa Jaakonsaari, Fin
