Inside the Brussels bubble: Two reviews of the JCI EUKHT

News from the 2017 JCI European Know-How Transfer

This years European Know-How Transfer has been again a very successful event for the delegates, JCI Europe and JCI.

We would like to thank the delegates for their active participation, the Members of European Parliament for working with us and the organizers like EUKHT COC Director Heidi Larsen and EUKHT Councilor Kathrine Stannov as well as Chairperson of the event 2017 JCI Executive Vice President Jonathan J. Borg for working on this event.

Next to the program on the Integration of Refugees in the Labour Market and the shadowing of the MEPs by our delegates, JCI Europe had the chance to meet with several EU stakeholders like the EU Commission, the European Parliament and the European Youth Forum to discuss JCI's impact in Europe and future cooperation to create synergies on fulfilling JCI's mission to provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change.

For more information on the outcome of this year's EUKHT please check out our press release here and our Refugee Integration Project Brochure here.

Furthermore the EU Commission provided us information on their Employers for Integration initiative which you can find here

If you are looking for EU Funding opportunities connected to integration you can find that here

Last but not least, if you want to learn even more about the European Parliament you can sign up here for the European Youth Event. EYE2018 takes place on 1 and 2 June 2018 in the European Parliament's seat in Strasbourg. It is a unique opportunity for young Europeans to make their voices heard.

During the event, they will:
  • Come up with ideas for the future of Europe
  • Discuss with European decision makers
  • Join more than 8,000 young people from all over Europe
Follow-up to the event:

July 2018: a report featuring the most concrete ideas discussed during the event will be distributed to all Members of the European Parliament (MEPs).
Autumn 2018: some participants will present the most developed ideas from the report to a number of parliamentary committees and get feedback from MEPs.

Experiencing the European Know-How Transfer - A participant's report

Lessons learned from the JCI European Know-How Transfer 2016 Almost 2 years have passed since I took part in the JCI European Know-How Transfer in Brussels. Those two years seem to have rushed by very fast as I can still remember the feeling of how it felt to be in a group of enthusiastic JCI members within the heart of European decision-making. For me the week offered an extensive outlook on how decision-making really happens on the European level - starting from lobbying the decision-makers in practice to cooperation between the European Parliament and the European Commission on setting directives. The best experience was that we really got the chance to learn from the people doing the actual daily work in Brussels and who had been involved in many of the decision-making processes for years. This is not something you can learn from text books or promotional brochures of the European Union. Personally, I also enjoyed the time I got to spend with my host Liisa Jaakonsaari, Fin...

From Reus to Hellas - A European Project that brings Hope for Peace

"From Reus to Hellas" is a project initiated by JCI Reus, and managed by JCI member Jordi Cervera Guasch, 25, from Reus, Catalonia, that aims to help young refugees stranded in refugee camps on Lesbos by providing sport and leisure activities. In this article Jordi shared his fascinating story with us. Along with JCI Reus, Jordi designed a program that could be useful and sustainable in tending to those displaced populations and quickly put into action. After several fund-raising efforts and with the indispensable collaboration of JCI Greece, in August 2016 the first team of 12 lifeguards was sent to the Kara Tepe refugee camp on the Greek island Lesbos, in the framework of a program that was called "From Reus to Hellas". "I have been in contact with the water since I was a child, swimming, training, and working as a lifeguard on the Catalan beaches every single summer since I was seventeen. After I had seen the images of the Syri...
